If you have ever found yourself confused when trying to figure out what size nuts are needed for bolts, then you are not alone. Many different sizes can be overwhelming and confusing. When you learn that there is an American standard measurement system and a metric measurement system for DIN standard hex bolt, you may give up. Regardless of these changes, measuring the size of the nut is not necessarily a mystery. There are five ways to measure nuts. When matching nuts with bolts or wrenches with nuts, the two measuring methods can solve most of the matching problems.
Step 1 Place the nut on a flat surface so that the hole is flush. Step 2 Place the end of the tape measure on a flat side of the nut periphery. Stretch the tape measure through the diameter of the nut to the flat edge and directly through the tape measure you pulled out. If it is metric hex nuts, please count the number of rows on the tape measure to find the measured value. If 9 rows are counted, the size is 9mm (mm) nuts. If the nut is an American standard(UNC & UNF), calculate the minimum number of rows on the tape measure by one sixteenth. Add one sixteenth to find the size. If you count 11 rows, the size of the nut is 11/16. You can also measure from point to point to find the “Whitworth System” measurement. Instead of measuring from plane to plane, you measure from point to point on a hexagon. These two measuring methods can help you know what size wrench or socket to use on the nut. Diameter measurement Step 1 Put down the nut as you did in Section 1. Set the end of the tape measure on one side of the internal thread of the nut. Step 2 Stretch the tape measure to the other side of the internal thread of the nut. Count the number of threads to find the diameter of the threaded hole. Measure the widest opening produced by the thread. This measurement will help you match the thread diameter of the nut with that of the bolt. Measure thread roughness or fineness. Step 1 Calculate the number of threads along the inner thickness of the nut. Use a magnifying glass and a pin to track the thread. Step 2 Write the total on a piece of paper. Calculate the number of threads per inch of nut thickness. Nuts with 16 threads per inch have coarse threads, while nuts with 20 threads per inch are fine threads. If the nut is 1/4 inch thick and 1/4 inch has 4 threads, the nut is thick. If the nut has five threads with a thickness of 1/4 inch, the nut is fine-threaded. To measure the nut thickness, clamp the nut between your fingers and measure the circumference parallel to the nut hole.
